What an amazing achievement, netball in Loughborough wins four awards during the ceremony on 5th December that took place at The Town Hall. England captain Jade Clarke and Jo Harten were also there presenting some of the awards which made this night extra special.
Lynn Moore, Charnwood Sapphires and all round champion for junior netball in Charnwood, won Volunteer of the Year, after previously winning Coach of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Sport. This award is a wonderful tribute to her dedication to netball and more specifically encouraging and nurturing the next generation of netballers.
Imogen Clements, Charnwood Sapphires, won Junior Volunteer of the Year and was quick to praise Lynn. Imogen is a Level 1 coach and helps at the junior coaching sessions as well as umpiring and playing herself. Imogen commented 'I feel very proud, it is great to work with children'.
Sue Jones, won Outstanding Contribution to Sport' for her tireless leadership of the LTNL along with her near 30 year commitment to Shepshed Netball Club. It is fair to say that Sue was shocked to win this award and her acceptance speech was typically understated, commenting 'I just love the sport, it's exciting and a lovely experience to win, but I don't feel as if I do anything'.
Charnwood Sapphires, won Club of the Year award against stiff competition from Loughborough Carillion Sports Club and Loughborough Leys Badminton Club. Some of the girls who were present to collect the award praised the fantastic community spirit that exists throughout the club and through the numerous events in which they participate.
Review of 2010/11 Season - Chairman's Report from AGM
The divisions were again very close – most places being decided on the last match of the season. As per last year, we encountered very few problems throughout the season. The winners and runners up will be mentioned later in the presentation of trophies.
We hope you found the web site valuable this season. As you know, the results are put on as soon as possible after the Saturday matches, therefore the League tables are available to one and all. There are odd occasions where this can be longer than a couple of days, but this is very rare. If you have anything that you would like putting on the web site, contact Jane Hammersley who will be more than happy to help you.
The Cup and Plate finals this year actually caused the committee a few problems as Shepshed A were in the final of the Plate and Scorpions 1 in the Cup Final. This meant that most of the committee were actually playing! We were therefore struggling to man the afternoon and would like to say a big thank you to Tamsen and Jude from Papura who kindly gave up their time to man the door throughout the afternoon. We really couldn’t have managed without their help. Thank you both. Now - on to the matches. The Plate final between Shepshed A and Charnwood Sapphires 3 was a very exciting game umpired by Jane Hammersley and Jo Aldis.
At the first quarter Shepshed were winning by one goal, Sapphires won the second quarter by one goal, it was a draw in the third quarter and then, energy overtook experience by four goals. At the end of the match, we were honoured to have our trophies presented by ex England and now Loughborough Lightning captain, Olivia Murphy.
The Plate match was followed by the junior exhibition match which this year was between the winners of the Schools Junior Tournament, Sacred Heart and the winners of the Charnwood Junior matches which are held at the Leisure Centre every Saturday at 3.00 pm. The final score was 8 – 1 to Sapphires, however, both teams played very well and enjoyed the game. This was umpired by Angie McCaughie and Jo Maron.
The Cup final between Hinckley Hurricanes and Scorpions 1 was a well fought match with some skilful play from both teams. Although Hinckley took an early lead, Scorpions fought back to draw the second quarter. However, Hinckley showed their form and widened the gap ending victorious. The match was very competently umpired by Jane Cook and Caroline Orton. Well done to all concerned - both on and off the court.
As always I must say a very big thank you to the committee for their hard work and support with special thanks to Elaine our Fixtures Secretary who has also taken on the role of Secretary this year.
Thank you very much Elaine, you have done a brilliant job. As I say every year, the LTNL is the very best and this is down to your committee who work tirelessly to maintain our high standard.
Well done and thank you one and all.
